All About Dana

Departing in 2006 from the kinetic world that is New York City, Dana Carmel is establishing herself as a thoughtful and refreshing singer-songwriter in San Francisco. Dana’s first EP, “The Difference” was released in 2008 to local critical acclaim. With an overlying theme of unrequited love, the EP ranges from the poppy and funky “Mr. Unavailable” to the more visceral and downtempo title track, “The Difference.”

While raised in Philadelphia and a graduate of NYU, Dana’s passion has always been music. “I took piano lessons on and off from the age of 6, played the French Horn when I was 8 (but stopped because it was too heavy for me) and got a guitar from my grandmother for my 13th birthday.” At NYU (after one year of studying psychology), she realized fully that her true calling was music and thereafter became dedicated to a requisite study of theory and performance. “I [sic]found myself in a 5×10 cubicle with just me and a piano on a regular basis. That is where I started to write my first songs.”

For 2010, Dana is working with several amazing musicians (including Jon Evans (Tori Amos), and Julie Wolf (Ani Difranco), and producers (Jon Evans) with the immediate purpose of releasing a full-length album. The new album will expand on the more simple arrangements of “The Difference” to a more vibrant and encompassing sound. The as of yet untitled album is due out next year. Until then, Dana can be found playing at venues throughout San Francisco.
