Hi! I’m so glad you wanted to get started with your songwriting, like, now!;) So without further ado, here are 5 prompts to get you moving and grooving (pun 100% intended) and beating resistance one day at a time.
no.1
What are your beliefs? What would you go to battle for? Write down what you believe in. “I believe that if I go slow and steady, I’ll win this race” (an example from my song “The Great Escape”). Take a stand for something lyrically. You have the microphone- use it wisely.
no.2
Write a song about a person you know, using a name. What’s interesting about them? What makes you want to write a song about them? Write a letter from their point of view to someone in their life. Can you turn it into a story? Think the Beatles (Eleanor Rigby, Michelle, Lovely Rita). Or better yet, listen to them.
no.3
Write a song about home. There are so many good songs about home and it’s a theme a lot companies like to use for commercials.
“Home”, by The Talking Heads. “Home Sweet Home” by Motley Crue, “Sweet Home Alabama” by Lynyrd Skynyrd to name a few of the popular ones.

no.5
Pick a word or object and incorporate it into a song. Use it as the title even. For example, try “Sofa”. Think about “Umbrella”, “California King” or “Chandelier”. Not the most common words used in songs yet they were all massively famous songs.
Pick a title of a song you like, and write a song with the same title. For example “Somebody to Love” is the title of a song by both Queen, and Justin Bieber. Same title, 2 very different songs.
My song, “Fighter” is very different than the song of the same name by Christina Aguilera.
