sorry, what'd ya say?
/picture this. a postered black-lit room circa 1993 . incense smoke mixed with other kinds of smoke. me and my bff sitting on her floor devouring the lyric booklet to pearl jam’s latest cd. pouring over the words.
“what’d he say? rewind. what do you think he means? what’s he really trying to say?”
”oh I love the guitar part there. it’s so beautiful. let’s listen again.”
while I don’t necessarily miss the baggy clothes and black lights, i often find myself wishing i was on that floor again, listening with all 5 senses to music that i love. it wasn’t in the background. it was the main event.
these days my friends and i are more likely to take a walk or go to dinner. which don’t get me wrong, is so enjoyable and i cherish.
but it means that when i want to pour over music that i love, i’m usually on the floor by myself. listening to single songs, not albums.
i couldn’t help but wonder, (wink to my sitc watchers) do people still listen to music like this or is it purely in the background like a screensaver? and if they don’t…..why not? they really should.
In this video I talk about
active listening in non musical ways
active listening in musical ways (hint: read above)
why active listening is so important
and I challenge you to do some serious active listening of your own.
in the comments below let me know what song you are going to actively listen to this week. if you’ve done it already, let me know what you heard. what were your favorite parts?
happy listening,
Dana
